ME Awareness Week
We are coming to the end of ME
Awareness Week; a disorder that is also diagnosed as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
(CFS).
ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) is a long-term debilitating condition that causes severe tiredness that doesn't improve after rest.
Although there is uncertainty around the exact cause, it is thought it can happen after an infection, or less commonly after trauma such as an accident or an operation. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and vary widely person to person.
Typical symptoms include persistent
exhaustion, muscle and/or joint pain, sleep disturbance, feeling ’flu-like and
having problems with memory and concentration.
Treatment options range from self-help, medicines such as paracetemol or anti-depressants, talking therapies, physical therapies and complementary therapies.
The Bowen Technique is a natural,
drug-free, non-invasive, complementary therapy that can help with pain, fatigue
and sleep disturbances.
Rather than 'making' the
body change, Bowen 'asks' the body to recognise the ailment and make the
changes it requires.
During the 30-60 minute
treatment, the Bowen practitioner makes small, rolling, movements over muscles,
tendons, ligaments and soft tissue at precise points on the body, using only
the amount of pressure appropriate for that individual.
No hard-tissue manipulation
or force is needed or used.
Between each set of moves,
the body is allowed to rest for a few minutes, to allow it to absorb the
information it has received and initiate the healing process.
One client who used
Bowen for CFS said: “I have long term chronic symptoms of ME & FM for 12½ years.
I have tried many
therapies including Osteopathy & Acupuncture and am now trying Bowen, with
Myofascial Release, finding this to be best for helping with pain and fatigue.
It’s a very
gentle relaxing technique with the energy moving sensations within the
treatment, relieving pain and feeling of "cloak lifting" from me at
the end and feeling like my legs work again, when walking out.
It has helped
from head to toe, hip/sciatica, with amazing realignment occurring within the
session.
I am unable to
tolerate medications in the daytime and find overall the level of pain is
reduced with regular Bowen treatment.
Lindsay is a
great therapist and has taken a special interest in FM, attending the extra
specific Myofascial technique training.”
