Make quitting smoking less of a drag

It’s World No Tobacco Day, so why not test your willpower and try kicking that bad habit for 24 hours?

But, of course, we all know that’s easier said than done.

The process of quitting smoking can trigger a lot of unwanted stress and anxiousness, which makes kicking the bad habit difficult.

Although there are patches, sprays, inhalators and even chewing gums to help you quit, some people prefer to do it naturally as these aids can have side effects.

The Bowen Technique is a natural, drug-free, non-invasive, complementary therapy that can help combat stress.

Rather than 'making' the body change, Bowen 'asks' the body to recognise the ailment and make the changes it requires.

During the 30-60 minute treatment, the Bowen practitioner makes small, rolling movements over muscles, tendons, ligaments and soft tissue at precise points on the body, using only the amount of pressure appropriate for that individual.

No hard-tissue manipulation or force is needed or used.

Between each set of moves, the body is allowed to rest for a few minutes, to allow it to absorb the information it has received and initiate the healing process.

Bowen is known for its soothing qualities for physical complaints; however it is an extremely relaxing experience that can have many emotional benefits too.

One client said: “It is exactly what I needed at a time when stress in my life has been at a peak and for quite some time now. The results I am experiencing are beyond my expectations…”

Remember The Person: Bowen for Alzheimer’s Awareness Week

Alzheimer’s Awareness Week commences this week; 7 days dedicated to an illness that was recently revealed as the UK’s 10th biggest killer.

Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia where a person sees a gradual decline in their memory, communication and reasoning.

The symptoms get progressively worse, meaning eventually a sufferer is completely reliant upon their care giver.

As our life expectancy increases, so do the number of cases of Alzheimer’s. It’s estimated that 1 in 85 people will have the disease in 2050.

Alzheimer’s is a terrible illness regarding the mental decay of a person and it is often presumed that sufferers don’t feel pain as sharply as those without the disease.

However, this is not the case. Often, older people with Alzheimer’s aren’t given as many painkillers as their peers and they find it difficult to talk about their pain, yet that doesn’t mean it’s not there.

The Bowen Technique is a natural, drug-free, non-invasive, complementary therapy that can be a gentle yet effective release of pain.

Rather than 'making' the body change, Bowen 'asks' the body to recognise the ailment and make the changes it requires. It works ‘with’ the body as opposed to ‘against’ it.

During the 30-60 minute treatment, the Bowen practitioner makes small, rolling, movements over muscles, tendons, ligaments and soft tissue at precise points on the body, using only the amount of pressure appropriate for that individual.

No hard-tissue manipulation or force is needed or used.

Between each set of moves, the body is allowed to rest for a few minutes, to allow it to absorb the information it has received and initiate the healing process.

Bowen is an extremely relaxing experience and is also very effective for stress management and frustration for an Alzheimer’s sufferer.

If you are caring for somebody with Alzheimer’s and are interested in how Bowen Therapy can help ease some of their symptoms, visit the website to find a Bowen therapist near you or call 0844 561 7173.

ME Awareness Week

ME Awareness Week

We are coming to the end of ME Awareness Week; a disorder that is also diagnosed as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).

ME (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) is a long-term debilitating condition that causes severe tiredness that doesn't improve after rest.

Although there is uncertainty around the exact cause, it is thought it can happen after an infection, or less commonly after trauma such as an accident or an operation. Symptoms can range from mild to severe and vary widely person to person.

Typical symptoms include persistent exhaustion, muscle and/or joint pain, sleep disturbance, feeling ’flu-like and having problems with memory and concentration.

Treatment options range from self-help, medicines such as paracetemol or anti-depressants, talking therapies, physical therapies and complementary therapies.

The Bowen Technique is a natural, drug-free, non-invasive, complementary therapy that can help with pain, fatigue and sleep disturbances.

Rather than 'making' the body change, Bowen 'asks' the body to recognise the ailment and make the changes it requires.

One client who used Bowen for CFS said: “I have long term chronic symptoms of ME & FM for 12½ years.

I have tried many therapies including Osteopathy & Acupuncture and am now trying Bowen, with Myofascial Release, finding this to be best for helping with pain and fatigue.

It’s a very gentle relaxing technique with the energy moving sensations within the treatment, relieving pain and feeling of "cloak lifting" from me at the end and feeling like my legs work again, when walking out.

It has helped from head to toe, hip/sciatica, with amazing realignment occurring within the session.

I am unable to tolerate medications in the daytime and find overall the level of pain is reduced with regular Bowen treatment.

Lindsay is a great therapist and has taken a special interest in FM, attending the extra specific Myofascial technique training.”

Bowen can help you take action after a stroke

Bowen can help you take action after a stroke

Today is Stroke Awareness Day and May is Action on Stroke Month.

Last year the Stroke Association made its first annual push to increase awareness of the impact of a stroke and reach out to many more stroke survivors and their families, and it has done the same this year.

Often people affected by a stroke, be that the victims or carers, do not know about the support out there for them.

The campaign highlights the everyday difficulties that stroke survivors and their families face and what needs to change to ensure stroke survivors are supported to make their best possible recovery.

Stroke survivors can find it hard to walk and general movement can be very difficult, resulting in severe pain.

Naturally, a person’s state after a stroke can vary depending on their rate of recovery.

Bowen Therapy has seen some wonderful results working with stroke victims.

A 59 year old stroke victim, previously diagnosed with both Type 2 diabetes and High Blood Pressure, was left paralysed on her left side and unable to speak. She received eight weeks of physiotherapy, which at the time only provided minimal improvement to her symptoms in three years since the stroke.

It was then recommended for her to receive Bowen Therapy; after three Bowen treatments (spaced a week apart) she was able to lift her arm and maintain it in an elevated position; after 2 more Bowen treatments she reported increased strength in her hip and the ability to control her toes – such that she could wear sling back shoes for the first time since her stroke.

The Bowen Technique is a natural, drug-free, non-invasive, complementary therapy that can help with post-stroke recovery.

Bowen is an extremely relaxing experience and can also aid any stress the stroke survivor may be feeling.

International Fibromyalgia Awareness Day

Sunday 12th May 2013 was International Fibromyalgia Awareness Day; a disorder of which awareness seems to be low.

Many people may know the symptoms of Fibromyalgia but may not have heard of the condition.

Fibromyalgia is a widespread musculoskeletal pain and fatigue disorder for which the cause is still unknown. Fibromyalgia means pain in the fibrous tissues in the body.

Most patients with fibromyalgia say that they ache all over and are tired a lot of the time. Their muscles may feel like they have been pulled or overworked and can sometimes twitch and at other times they burn. More women than men are afflicted with fibromyalgia, but it shows up in people of all ages.

The Bowen Technique is a natural, drug-free, non-invasive, complementary therapy that can help with fibromyalgia, chronic pain and fatigue.

Rather than 'making' the body change, Bowen 'asks' the body to recognise the ailment and make the changes it requires.

One client who used Bowen for Fibromyalgia said: “I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in 2008, after suffering for 2 years with chronic pain and fatigue.

“I had been for massages, which hurt so much afterwards and only really helped for about a week before the pain returned.

“One day I went for a massage and the masseur told me about something called Bowen.

“On my first appointment, I was asked about my health and the list of problems was long… I sounded like a helpless case!

“I didn’t know what to expect, but my first treatment was so relaxing. I was a little unsure how effective it would be as it was so gentle.

“At first I was having a treatment every week, then every two, then less frequently, I now go about 6 weeks between treatments.

“After the first few weeks I was amazed that my levels of pain had dropped by about 50%, at first I thought it was maybe a coincidence, and maybe I was just going through a good spell, but almost 10 months later, I swear by it.

“I have taken leaflets to my doctor’s surgery for them to recommend it to other sufferers, and tell everyone how amazing it is.”

Breathe easy with Bowen

Today is World Asthma Day, and yesterday kicked off Asthma Awareness Week, a public health event that doesn’t often get the coverage it deserves.

Asthma is a common chronic inflammatory disease of the airways and symptoms include wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath.

There are currently 5.4 million people in the UK receiving treatment for asthma; the disorder has been significantly more prevalent since the 1970s.

An acute asthma exacerbation, commonly known as an asthma attack, can be a very scary experience.

Signs which occur during an asthma attack could include the use of accessory muscles of respiration, a paradoxical pulse (a pulse that is weaker during inhalation and stronger during exhalation), and over-inflation of the chest.

A blue colour of the skin and nails may occur from lack of oxygen also.

This means that an asthma sufferer’s quality of life and day-to-day living can be severely affected by the respiratory disorder.

The Bowen Technique is a complementary therapy renowned for helping with asthma symptoms.

With primarily fingers and thumbs, the Bowen practitioner makes small, rolling movements over muscles, tendons, ligaments and soft tissue at precise points on the body, using only the amount of pressure appropriate for that individual. No hard-tissue manipulation or force is needed or used.

Bowen triggers the body’s own healing systems i.e. Rather than 'making' the body change, Bowen 'asks' the body to recognise the ailment and make the changes it requires.

Between each set of moves, the body is allowed to rest for a few minutes, to allow it to absorb the information it has received and initiate the healing process.

As Bowen is both very gentle and non-invasive, there is no danger in using it with asthma and other respiratory conditions.

The treatment can reduce the severity of attacks, and has given some sufferers very effective results that last.

What the technique does achieve very often is the release of tightness in the chest which aids both asthmatics and other respiratory sufferers.
