Cystic Fibrosis Week – Breathe Easy with Bowen Therapy

Cystic Fibrosis Week is dedicated to raising awareness of the genetic condition in which the lungs and digestive system become clogged with a thick, sticky mucus.

Symptoms usually start at quite a young age, and can include:

  • Persistent cough
  • Recurring chest and lung infections
  • Poor weight gain

There is no known cure for Cystic Fibrosis, meaning that any and all treatments currently available are to help ease the symptoms, while making the condition as comfortable to live with as possible.

Along with bronchodilators (medication that helps to expand the airways inside the lungs, making it easier to breathe) – antibiotics are used to treat chest and lung infections, while physiotherapy is used to aid clear mucus from the lungs.

Bowen Therapy doesn’t “treat”, but it can help to ease respiratory symptoms.

Using light touches at specific points of the body, through light clothing or skin, the Bowen Technique is a particularly unconventional massage – drug free, complementary and gentle in approach. Rather than ‘making’ the body change, Bowen ‘asks’ the body to recognise the ailment and make the changes it requires.

During the 30-60 minute treatment, the Bowen practitioner makes small, rolling movements over muscles, tendons, ligaments and soft tissue at precise points on the body, using only the amount of pressure appropriate for that individual.

No hard-tissue manipulation or force is needed or used.

Between each set of moves, the body is allowed to rest for a few minutes, to allow it to absorb the information it has received and initiate the healing process.

If you would like to try Bowen, find a qualified Bowen practitioner near to you by visiting the Bowen website or calling 0844 561 7173.

Homeopathy Awareness Week UK

Keep on top of your health

Homeopathy Awareness Week

This week sees Homeopathy Awareness Week coming to an end. 14th- 21st June 2013.

As summer quickly approaches we all want to keep on top of our health to make the most of those irregular bursts of British sun.

Homeopathy is the ‘like with like’ treatment for illness with highly diluted medicine. The aim of this treatment is to trigger the natural healing process of the body. This might be of interest to those of you too scared to try out any hard hitting medication.

The term homeopathy is based on the ideas of German doctor Samuel Hahnemann in the 1790s. It is believed by many practitioners to aid any condition; however the most common include asthma, allergies, stress and anxiety amongst others. Some well known users of homeopathy include David Beckham and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

If homeopathy seems tempting to you, perhaps you should consider Bowen. Similar to homeopathy, Bowen Therapy promotes the self healing of the body. Bowen is not a forceful treatment, rather a complimentary aid to start the natural healing of the body. Gentle pressure is applied to precise parts of the body with unique ‘rolling type’ movements to stimulate the muscles and soft body tissues.

Natural and drug free, Bowen can be used alongside medication and is most commonly used for sports injuries, whiplash, migraines and IBS. Also known for its’ relaxing qualities Bowen helps to relieve stress and anxiety.

Feature Therapist: Kim Holmes

Mother and animal-lover - Kim Holmes was born and bred in Bradford, before relocating to Leeds where she has now resided for over 20 years. Working in insurance, Kim gained strong experience in accounts, finance and relationship management.

After being made redundant, Kim found the opportunity to change career path and pursue something she felt passionate about.

Kim trained and became fully qualified in Bowen Therapy, achieving a VTCT qualification in Reflexology, Aromatherapy and Massage therapy. She then gained further qualifications in anatomy, physiology and emergency first aid procedures.

Initially training in Bowen to work with animals Kim first studied Bowen Therapy for people. She found the course so interesting and inspiring (also beneficial to her own asthma), that she dedicated herself to providing Bowen Therapy for people to this day and is still amazed and inspired by the therapy.

Now that Kim offers her own service of Bowen therapy, she adds “I am constantly amazed at how effective this therapy is, and delighted that my clients experience the benefits of Bowen, with noticeable improvements in their day to day activities and function.” As well as treating musculo-skeletal issues, Kim works with people living with neurological problems such as MS and Parkinson's, and works with the West Yorkshire MS Therapy Centre. She also has a number of clients living with fibromyalgia and ME/CFS.

Just over a year spent as treasurer for the BTPA, Kim brings her accountancy skills, as well as energy, enthusiasm and her love of Bowen treatment to the role.

Naomi Kent, presenter from Radio Aire, received Bowen treatment from Kim, giving her account on how she found it:

What complaint or symptoms brought you for a Bowen treatment?

“Bad lower back pain & tension”

What did your symptoms prevent you from doing?

“I had to stop running & exercising and found even sitting down painful”

Have you been able to resume doing them partially/fully since having Bowen treatment?

“The pain has virtually disappeared with just an occasional twinge and I'm back to running & exercising fully again which is great.”

Testimonial of my Bowen Therapy experience (How have you benefited from your Bowen treatment?)

“Kim has not only helped me with the problems in my lower back which she has magically erased, she has also helped with tension headaches & overall stress.”

“I find the experience of Bowen really relaxing, Kim made me feel completely at ease & the fact she managed to not only get rid of the initial issue but improve other areas of my health and wellbeing was a great bonus. Couldn't recommend her highly enough!”

One client that is “constantly singing Kim's praises and the benefits of Bowen, telling everyone whatever their problem to go and see her” is Linda from Bradford.

Linda suffered a lot of pain in her legs and knees and was suggested to go to and see Kim for some Bowen treatment. To determine the route of where the pain stems from, the treatment involves clients talking with the therapist beforehand so that they can establish the problem areas and feel comfortable. A full consultation is undertaken to determine the problem more fully, to include any history behind it. This allows for a more thorough diagnosis and allows the therapist to target the problem more efficiently.

After Linda expressed that every step she took was painful, the gentle treatment managed to get rid of the tightness and pain in Linda’s legs and she found that “one treatment a month it keeps away the pain.”

As a result of Bowen, Linda no longer has to worry about being in pain when getting out of chairs and can now do it with ease. She also finds going up and down the stairs a lot easier than she used to.

BTPA have been a great support to me as I have ventured into the world of self employed therapist and I sincerely hope that I can now contribute support to the committee and our members.

International Men’s Health Week

Taking place in the second week of June, International Men’s Health Week (IMHW) focuses on promoting men’s health and wellbeing across Europe.

Falling on the 10th – 16th June this year, the objective is to encourage national and international organisations to implement policies and agents that can improve the prosperity of males within different areas of activity.

Research (commissioned by Mind) has found that work is the most stressful factor in people’s lives. We don’t exactly need statistics to understand that working within an institution can stimulate pressure – especially amongst men.

The consequences of stress can lead to the body’s mental, emotional and physical response to change from what it’s used to. Although it is considered a normal part of life, many men still struggle to deal with the effects and it is only then that stress becomes a negative possession – when there is no form of relief!

Effectively, men coping with stress can benefit professionally and personally from undergoing Bowen treatment.

The Bowen Technique is a natural, drug-free, non-invasive, complementary therapy that can help combat stress.
Rather than 'making' the body change, Bowen 'asks' the body to recognise the ailment and make the changes it requires.

With most men expressing that their biggest anxiety is “the pressure to be successful” in the workplace, Bowen can be of assistance in many cases of emotional stress, where relaxation is a prime factor in easing pain and anxiety.

The treatment is collectively known for its soothing qualities for physical complaints and is an extremely relaxing experience that can have many emotive benefits too. We believe that The Bowen Technique is ideal for the promotion of men’s health and wellbeing and is most definitely an agent that can improve the prosperity of health within males.

If you have you suffer with stress or know somebody who does, and are interested in how Bowen Therapy can help you visit the website to find a Bowen therapist near you or call 0844 561 7173.
